10 Questions to Answer before Purchasing an Adjustable Bed

1. When should I choose a mattress?

You should purchase a mattress and adjustable bed together so that you can be sure they will be compatible. If you’re shopping locally, make sure to spend as much time as possible testing the mattress before you buy. Local stores typically will not offer a comfort guarantee or in-home sleep trial. Many online companies, however, can offer a lower price in addition to an in-home sleep trial for the mattress. Neither local stores nor online retailers will offer a trial period on an adjustable bed, however. So, make sure that you do your research on each model you consider before making the purchase.

2. How are adjustable beds priced?

Adjustable beds are priced based on the included features that include, but are not limited to:

  • Massage Options (wave, variable intensity, timer)
  • Wired or Wireless Remote
  • Wall-Holding Technology
  • Preset and/or Programmable Positions

Be very careful when dealing with a company that does not post prices clearly on their website or require you to call them to obtain a quote. Often, these methods are used to get you on the phone with a high-pressure salesman who may not have your best interest at heart.

3. What sizes do adjustable beds come in?

Most manufacturers offer all standard sizes (including Twin, Twin XL, Full/Double, Queen, King, and Cal King). Usually, the king sizes are offered only in a split option. By selecting a standard size, you can match it with your existing foundation to ensure a perfect fit. The specific dimensions of an adjustable bed often vary by approximately 1” (usually shorter) to help make sure it’ll fit with existing bed frames.

4. Can I use the adjustable bed with my existing bed frame?

Yes, as long as the adjustable bed is a standard size, there should be no compatibility issues. In some cases, or if you only have a headboard or footboard (without a frame), you may need to purchase additional hardware in order to attach it to an adjustable bed.

5. Which motor do I need?

The motor is vital to the operation of the adjustable bed. Naturally, you’ll want to make sure that it’s covered under warranty. With that said, there are two types of motors to choose from: DC and AC. DC motors are usually quieter while AC motors offer additional lifting capacity.

6. Is the company reputable and established?

If you’re shopping locally or especially online, you’ll want to know that you aren’t purchasing from a fly-by-night company. You wouldn’t want the company to “close their doors” immediately after taking your money. One way you can tell if a company is established is by looking for third-party, verified reviews from previous customers. This can help establish a history of either good or bad service for you to see. Keep in mind that “testimonials” only tell you the good side of the story and they are often hand-picked or even forged by a company.

7. How good is the warranty?

Make sure that you can find warranty information in both print and on the company’s website. Also make sure that the warranty is detailed enough so there’s no question about what is or is not covered. Remember that it’s the manufacturer of the adjustable bed who honors the warranty. It’s the dealer’s responsibility, however, to make the warranty information available to you.

8. Does it have to look like a hospital bed?

No! An adjustable bed, although it can perform similar adjustments, is not the same thing as a hospital bed. The difference is in the appearance. The best adjustable beds are manufactured to offer a seamless look with your bedroom furniture. Aesthetics make a difference. The adjustable bed should appear pleasant to you since it’s something you’ll see every day.

9. Can the adjustable bed be paid for by Medicare or medical insurance?

In some cases, the purchase may be covered by Medicare or an insurance provider. After the purchase, you’ll need to file the claim with the insurance company and use the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) code # E0295 which represents a semi-electric (head and foot adjustment) adjustable bed, without side rails, and without a mattress. Along with this code, you’ll also need to provide a physician’s prescription for an adjustable bed and a paid receipt / invoice to the insurance company. Be sure you confirm coverage prior to purchasing your adjustable bed.

10. Who are the most reputable companies and top brands for adjustable beds?

The top, most reputable brands for adjustable beds are Leggett & Platt, Astrabeds, Tempurpedic, and Amerisleep. Each of these companies offers a solid warranty, clear pricing, superb customer service, and many positive third-party verified customer reviews.

You’ll notice that Craftmatic isn’t included in this list. This is because a quick search of “Craftmatic Reviews” yields very poor customer reviews and numerous complaints against the business on consumer report websites. The complaints cover areas ranging from warranty to sales techniques to customer service and quality issues.

Beware of companies that operate on eBay. Although the prices may be cheaper, they might be selling a used bed as “new” without informing you. Also, it’s hard to be sure that the company will be around later if you need service or support for your adjustable bed.
